The May newsletter of the Green Committee of the Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay includes several suggestions for getting around without a car. Here’s the article in full:
“Cars produce 27% of our country’s emissions, and many alternative forms of transportation are cost-effective, environmentally responsible, and enjoyable. Living in Boston and the Back Bay means public transit options abound. Here are a few ideas to get you out of your car, walking more, and enjoying the view. (Don’t forget that seniors travel at half price!)
Ride the Bus or the MBTA train
Logan Express Airport Shuttle leaves from Back Bay Train Station on Dartmouth Street, or 800 Boylston at the entrance to the Prudential. The shuttle runs every 30 minutes with drop-offs at all terminals, and the driver will give you “skip the security line” upon arrival (free upon return).
Want to take a walk at the world-famous Arnold Arboretum? The #39 bus leaving from Copley Square takes you there. Or ride the Orange line from Back Bay station to Forest Hills, as the Arboretum is only a pleasant 10-minute walk away.
Hop a Boat
An MBTA Ferry leaves Long Wharf and takes you to the landing at the Charlestown Navy Yard, where you can walk amidst great harbor views and parks and enjoy excellent restaurants.
Take a City Cruises ferry from Long Wharf along the coast that lands in Salem, where you can enjoy the Peabody Essex Museum or all the things Salem has to offer.
Take the Commuter Rail
Leave the traffic on 93 behind and board the commuter train from North Station to the beautiful towns of the North Shore on the Newburyport line. No need to worry about traffic or places to park in popular towns like Rockport, Manchester, or Beverly Farms. Take your bike on the train for free on weekends, ride between towns, and then hop back on the train from another town and travel back to Boston.”
